483.20 - Resident Assessments
#46 in National Citation Ranking
646 citations nationally (June 2025-June 2026)
A nursing facility must not admit any new resident with a mental disorder or intellectual disability unless the State mental health or intellectual disability authority has determined, prior to admission, that the individual requires the level of services provided by a nursing facility and whether the individual requires specialized services. Screening is not required for a resident readmitted after being transferred for care in a hospital, or — at State option — for an individual admitted directly from a hospital after acute inpatient care, who requires nursing facility services for that same condition, and whose attending physician certified before admission that fewer than 30 days of nursing facility services are likely.
